BORN ON A MONDAY
Episode IIAl happened to meet his former teacher when he was a boy at an event. He introduced himself & also informed him that he also became a teacher because of his influence & a specific event (I absolutely love this story).
The old teacher couldn’t recall the event so Al reminded him.
When they were still children, a classmate, Tommy, had brought in a new watch to school. It was such a beautiful watch that Al wanted it for himself. So he stole it.
Tommy soon discovered that his watch was missing & informed the teacher. The teacher calmly asked for a general search & when it still wasn’t found, pleaded that the culprit come forward, promising that there would be no punishment.
Al refused to come forward because he didn’t want to be exposed as a thief. So he stayed back.
The teacher, seeing that no one had come forward, informed the class that he was going to personally search each person one after the other. They were to line up by one wall & he would go through their pockets & belongings.
Al now knew that he would be discovered but before the teacher started, he asked them all to close their eyes.
He then proceeded to search each pocket. Al wasn’t the last in line but when the teacher got to him, he found the watch, removed it & continued searching like nothing happened.
When he was through searching, he asked everyone to return to their seats & gave Tommy back his watch.
He didn’t confront Al & never mentioned the event to anyone or nor did he bring it up again.
Al said that that one event changed his life forever. He never stole again & he decided that he wanted to use his life showing people mercy like the teacher showed to him.
I have observed in my life that the greatest influence that can be expressed through work comes from people who do three things:
– They love what they do
– They do what they love
– And they love the people they serve.
Everything has a time limit, even a rotten job . You will not do it forever. So if there are any benefits that can help you or your family, find it in you to love your job or love what you do. It will end one day & you can move on to better things. If you truly cannot, then quit & find something that you can do & truly say that you love what you do. It is loving what you do that creates unparalleled value.
Then there are people that are privileged to do what they absolutely love. They didn’t have to move themselves to love the job, they picked it by passion & easily love doing it. This is great, but only because they love what they do which automatically means they do what they love. More value!
Finally, those that have been able to love the people they serve have been known to offer exceptional service. This doesn’t mean that they’re always giving out hugs & sending love notes. But it means that they hold the people they serve in such high regard that they believe that these people deserve their best service. This moves them to go over & beyond normal expectations. Finding their own Kaizen or never ending improvement in all they do.
The story isn’t over!
The old teacher then told Al that the story wasn’t complete.
Al was shocked.
How so? He asked. The teacher said that while he was searching, he also had his eyes closed & so he didn’t know who took it & never knew it was Al.
Give the people you serve the chance to receive unforgettable gifts.
Love what you do
Do what you love &
Love the people you serve.
Have a great week!
See you next Monday.
